If we assess the present Somali Government whose term of office is about to end, it is
apparent that the road map set for the Government is not fully accomplished. Constitution
which is the basic laws and principles is unfinished. While most of the Regional States were
established with the exception of Lower Shebelle and Hiiran, most of the districts are not
functioning to cater essential services to the people. Members of the Gov. spent excessive
foreign travels which didn’t bring positive results. Unnecessary political entanglement within
the Government paralyzed the smooth running of day to day services. Unemployment
is rampant especially young men who graduated from Universities. Gov. failed to mandate
rules forcing foreign NGOs to stop hiring counterparts from Kenya and instead employ graduates.
In the last four years, there are no projects that were initiated in the economic sectors, namely
agriculture, animal husbandry, fishery, water supply and roads which serves the felt needs of
the rural people.
It is true there are certain impediments that were imposed by International Community.
The Government has no control over foreign aid money. Instead foreign NGOs was designated to use
the money on services they choose fit. I can’t ascertain whether Government has final approval for the
the NGOs plan of work. The reports issued by the Monetary Group from time to time is bias and highly
exaggerated to defame the Government leaders as corrupted and inaptitude. Such unfortunate
characterization affects even foreign investment and put Somalia in limbo.
I recently visited Mogadishu after 24 years. It was shocking to see damages that happened to
old part of the city. The rest of the city is under construction. In some quarters, like Hodan District,
sparkling high rises were built. When you look at Bakaarah , it reminds you American down town.
It is apparent that huge sum of money were invested in land and building. As a result, real state
value is at its lowest ebb at the present.
My friend and I visited a newly built city named Dare Salam, west of
Mogadishu and joined with 9 km. tarmac road. We were told group of Somali entrepreneurs
pulled their resources and decided to build sub- rub city self –contained. Modern apartments
were under construction. Potential buyers are middle classes in Mogadishu and Diaspora people.
In any upheaval that happens in the world, majority people suffers and few prosper. The middle
class that emerged after the civil war in every major cities in Somalia as well as Somaliland amassed
wealth from monopoly agencies which fixes their prices in absence of Government regulation.
They function under the belief “the end justify the means.” They forget to know success come
and go, but integrity remains forever.
The people of Mogadishu including internally displaced population is roughly estimated 3 million.
Despite that number, there no sign of starvation among the ordinary people. There abundant of meat,
fish, vegetable and fruits. Of course there are inflated prices that limit the purchasing power of the
people. People yearn for peace, tranquility and fully functioning Government. Amazingly, despite
all those hurdles, people follow their routine daily lives.
Mogadishu used to be cosmopolitan and cleanest city in Africa. The question is when the city will
regain its past glory as a city which every Somali cherish. There is consensus that those who belief
once the security situation stabilizes those who fled the city will come back. Others argue unless
comprehensive reconciliation takes place there is no come back. The President reiterated that
Mogadishu belongs to all Somalis, while traditional elders said Mogadishu belongs to one clan.
One thing that embolden the elders to make such statement is the fact that the country has been
divided in to clan enclaves of federal status each clan struggling to grip lion’s share of political power.
One critical issue facing the present lame-duke Government is how to handle the negotiation between
Somali and Somali land. So far, the case of the Somaliland was not genuinely handled. One thing we
should bear in mind even though Somaliland is recognizes by International Community, yet it is a viable
State that fulfilled all components of good governance. It is wrong to treat Somaliland the same as
Regional State which have not solid foundation of Governance.
The negotiation of that scope needs shrewd leader who masters art of negotiation and can create confidence in the opposite part. In Somaliland young men who were born after civil war have no
perception of united Somalia. This critical issue should be openly debated with no apprehension
among the people of Somali land whether union with Somalia bring better off
economically, socially and politically.

Awdalpress(Demark) 15 May2016–Somaliland Diaspora Organisation in Denmark welcomed Eid Ali Ahmed to Denmark. Eid is a member of Somaliland Societies in Europe (SSE) and was former Chairman of this umbrella organization for Somaliland communities and organizations in the European Counties. Eid lives in Cardiff the Capital City of Wale, and at this leg of journey he came from Sweden where he attended SSE Internal Conference and Annual General Meeting on 8th and 9th April which took place in Stockholm. On the first day of the Conference which was held at Swedish Parliament Eid presented a paper with the title: Good Governance and Economic Viability are the key Pillars for Somaliland Recognition. Second day Eid shared with other Somaliland communities and organizations two important projects he is involved for addressing the health and education needs of Somaliland people namely:
• Somaliland Mental Health Support Project
• Darlington Gacmadheere Foundation
In this tripartite meeting which took place in Copenhagen on 15th April Eid explained in detail the vision, strategic objectives and activities of SSE and the proceedings of International Conference SSE held in Stockholm. Likewise Abdillahi Ahmed Xeef who is member of SSE Executive Committee and Somaliland Diaspora Organisation in Denmark talked about the role of SSE and the International Conference held in Stockholm. Also Jamal Odowa, Abdillahi Xeef and Eid in a concerted way talked about the relationship between SSE and Danish Refugee Council (DRC) and the historic Award SSE gave DRC on 3rd July 2008 in recognition of DRC excellent work in Somaliland. The DRC was nominated for the Award after an assessment process of the work of the key International NGOs working in Somaliland. The DRC leadership and staff were pleased with receiving the SSE Award.

A delegation of SSE including Abdirahman Abdillahi, Eid Ali Ahmed and Mohamed Bashe came from UK for this historic Award ceremony on 3rd July 2008. With the assistance of members of Somaliland community in Denmark the Award Ceremony was organized by Mohamed Amin Siyad, who was SSE Communication Commissioner.
Now SSE is conducting an assessment of the work of International NGOs for the last 10 years and an Award will be given to the winner in 2017.
Also Eid explicitly explained in perspective the historic difference between Somaliland and Somalia and the contrasting impacts of the experiences and legacies of the two different colonial systems of 80 years. He explained the collaboration among Somaliland community in Wales and also in UK and that Somalilanders have been in UK over 100 years as Somaliland was a member of the British Empire. Eid mentioned Somalilanders in UK have many British friends who support Somaliland.
Finally Eid talked about in detail about two initiatives he is involved namely Somaliland Mental Health Support Project (www.somalilandmentalhealth.com) and Darlington Gacmadheere Foundation for Somaliland Educational Development (www.darlingtongacmadheerefoundation.org). He mentioned that Somaliland Mental Health Support organization (SMHSO) based in Cardiff is building a mental health unit of 18 rooms in Hargeisa Group Hospital. On 14th April the Somaliland Minister for Health Suleiman Issa Ahmed (Xaglatoosiye) and SMHSO representatives officially laid the stone for this unit costing about USD 70,000 to give better services to those with mental health problems. For the Dalington Gacmadheere Foundation Eid mentioned this foundation has been established in honoring Richard Darlington who taught Somaliladers for 29 years (1952 – 1971) and the incumbent Somaliland President His Excellency Ahmed Mohamed Mohamoud was one of his students as Eid and many educated and professional Somalilanders were. Eid mentioned that in 2011 Miss Nasra Jama Abdillahi received the highest grades and was number one of the secondary school graduates of Somaliland and the Foundation sponsored her university education. Nasra is graduating this June with 2 different degrees. The first 3 students graduated last year and now the Foundation sponsors 31 students: 14 studying medicine, 10 studying Engineering and science and 7 studying economics, business and ICT.

These students are the best of the best of the graduates of Somaliland secondary schools. and they are from every region of Somaliland spanning from East to West of Somaliland including Sanaag, Sool, Buhoodle, Togdheere, Sahil, Baligubadle, Marodijeex, Gabiley and Awdal as the case was for Sheikh and Amoud Secondary School in the old days.
Aabdillahi Ahmed Xeef and Jamal Odowa Laari from Somaliland Diaspora Organisation in Denmark and Martin Wolf Andersen from International Diaspora Unit of DRC exchanged and shared information on their activities and had discussions how to work closely together. Martin in detail explained their International Diaspora programme and the procedure for submitting proposals for Somaliland and Somalia development.
This important meeting was arranged by Ambassador Abdirizak Diinari who is a member of Somaliland Diaspora Organisation in Denmark and SSE. Unfortunately he could not attend the meeting as he had other prior commitment.

It is 25 years since the Republic Somaliland reasserted the independence it gained on 26th June 1960 which was recognised by many countries including UK at the time. That independence was compromised after 4 days, when Somaliland voluntarily united with former Italian Somalia on 1st July 1960 to form Somali Republic but re-asserted on 18th May 1991. To celebrate the silver jubilee of this re-assertion of sovereignty, Somaliland community in the UK will be holding static rally at Richmond Terrace opposite 10 Downing Street.

The Republic of Somaliland plays an instrumental role in maintaining peace and stability in the Horn of Africa by fighting against piracy and terrorism. This young nation has avoided the devastation of warlordism, terrorism, and anarchism that continue to ravage in the region. Somaliland has laid the foundations of strong institutions built on the principles of making political compromises, consociational ethnic democracy and by holding one person one vote democratic elections.

Engineer Mohamed Balayah who is an active Somalilander remarked at a meeting of the UK 18 May organising committee “Somaliland people’s struggle to reclaiming their independence was not an easy task. I’m sure our country will secure international recognition one day. What is important is to stay united as a nation”.

While British Somalilanders are holding the rally to celebrate 25 years of sustained peace and stability, the aim of the rally is also to highlight the unjust situation Somaliland face in its quest for international recognition and UK Somaliland Diaspora’s unreserved support to the plight of the people of Somaliland.

During the quarter of a century the Republic of Somaliland was lingering in a de facto statehood, a number of new states including Eritrea, East Timor, Kosovo, former Yugoslav Republics, former Czechoslovakia Republics, Baltic Republics and South Sudan, have joined the world community and had been accorded with full international recognition.

In a recent address to the Somaliland Community in the UK, Mr Ali Adan Awale – Head of the Somaliland Mission in the UK stated “18 May 1991 was the day we saved our people and country from the anarchy next door. I’m proud of our leaders who made the wise decision of reclaiming our independence on that blessed day”

Somaliland was pressured to engage in talks with Somalia. The talks have become futile. There is no sign that Somalia is willing to consider an amiable confirmation of the end of the union (as we have recently seen in the Sudan and Eritrea). Neither is Somaliland willing to enter into any discussion with Somalia that has no de facto legitimacy to represent Somalia. Therefore, without genuine engagement with the Somaliland – Somalia conundrum to lay the defunct union to rest, the current policy of international neglect of Somaliland’s status will inevitably lead to another costly war. Somaliland has already experienced a long costly war in the 1980s waged by the last Somalian government and will do everything it can to retain the independence reinstated at heavy price.

Finally with this rally, we humbly request from the British Government to respect Somaliland’s right for re-asserting the sovereignty it has gained from Britain on 26th June 1960 and to honour the historical ties between the two countries.
